Why the right kit matters
Travel kit is safety, not decoration. UK Highway Code rule 57 requires suitable restraint for pets. A 25 kg unrestrained dog in a 30 mph crash becomes a 750 kg projectile — fatal for both dog and humans.
Car restraints
Option 1: crash-tested harness + seatbelt clip
- Look for CHPC (Centre for Pet Safety) Certified or Tüv equivalent.
- Top performers: Kleinmetall Allsafe, Sleepypod Clickit, Hunter.
- UK cost: £50-120.
- Suits small to medium dogs on the back seat.
Option 2: crate in the boot
- Rigid aluminium or polymer, fitted to the boot dimensions.
- Crash-tested to 4-5 stars (Auto Express, Which?).
- Brands: Variocage by 4x4 North America, MIM Safe, Kleinmetall.
- Cost: £400-1,200 (worth it for big dogs).
Option 3: boot dividers / dog guards
- Separates boot from cabin but does NOT restrain the dog.
- Useful as add-on, not as sole restraint.
- Cost: £60-150.
Flight crates (IATA)
- IATA Live Animals Regulations compliant.
- Dog must stand, turn and lie down comfortably.
- Rigid for hold, soft only for in-cabin where allowed.
- Brands: Petmate Sky Kennel, Atlas, Sherpa (in-cabin).
- UK cost: £60-300.
Useful accessories
- Collapsible water bottle/bowl: £8-20.
- Boot liner / blanket: protects car and dog. £15-40.
- Biodegradable poo bags: dispenser + 200 bags. £5-20.
- First-aid kit: bandages, saline, antiseptic, tick remover, vet-prescribed anti-emetic. £20-50.
- ID tag: name, phone with country code, "I am chipped". £5-15.
- Red-light head torch: night walks. £10-25.
- Familiar toy: smell of home reduces stress.
- Calming aid optional: Adaptil spray, Pet Remedy. £15-30.
Long car journeys
- Stops every 2-3 hours for walk, water and toilet.
- Last meal 3h before departure, not during travel.
- Window shades for sun protection.
- AC running on warmer days.
- Never left unattended in a parked car — even at UK temperatures.
