Why adopt

Reasons to choose adoption

❤️
You save a life

More than 100,000 dogs enter UK shelters every year, and many never make it out. Adopting instead of buying is the first step to change that.

🏠
Already socialised

Most adult dogs in shelters already have a clear personality and come neutered, vaccinated and dewormed. Fewer surprises.

💰
Real savings

The adoption fee usually covers microchip, vaccinations, neutering and deworming. A puppy from a breeder can cost ten times more once everything is added up.

🧠
Adults are already trained

An adult dog can stay alone, doesn't chew everything and sleeps at night. The puppy phase can be exhausting — adoption skips it.

❓ Frequently asked questions about adoption

How much does it cost to adopt a dog in the UK?+
Most shelters charge an adoption fee between £150 and £300. This usually covers microchipping, initial vaccinations, neutering/spaying and a vet check. Some smaller rescues are donation-based if you can show you'll care for the animal properly.
What's the difference between adopting from a shelter and a private rescue?+
Shelters are registered organisations with physical kennels. Private rescues work with foster networks — volunteers who keep the dog in their own home. Both options are legitimate; foster dogs tend to be better socialised because they live in a real domestic setting.
Can I adopt a dog if I work full-time?+
Yes, with the right setup. An adult dog already used to being alone is ideal, paired with a gradual settling-in period. Consider dog walkers or doggy daycare if you're out for more than 6 hours a day. CanAI helps you manage reminders and routines.
What about breeds restricted under the Dangerous Dogs Act?+
Under the UK Dangerous Dogs Act, certain breeds (Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, Fila Brasileiro and XL Bully) are restricted. Ownership requires a Certificate of Exemption, third-party insurance, neutering, microchipping and a muzzle and lead in public. Most shelters won't rehome these breeds directly — they'll explain the legal route if relevant.
Can I return the dog if the adoption doesn't work out?+
Reputable shelters always include a return clause: if the placement doesn't work, the dog comes back to the shelter (never to the street). Most adoptions also include a trial fostering period of 2–4 weeks to minimise returns.
