Why adopt internationally
Spain, Romania, Greece and Turkey have huge populations of street and pound dogs facing euthanasia or worse. UK shelters are comparatively well-funded. International adoption can save a life with very few alternatives.
What you gain
- Often extraordinarily grateful, gentle dogs.
- Variety: Spanish galgos, Romanian rescues, Greek mountain dogs.
- A meaningful rescue — you change one specific life.
What you need to be ready for
Mediterranean diseases
- Leishmaniasis: most common, chronic, may need lifetime treatment.
- Ehrlichiosis: bacterial, treatable if caught early.
- Babesiosis: tick-borne, can recur.
- Heartworm (Dirofilaria): serious, treatment is intensive.
Reputable charities run a full "Med 4" blood panel before adoption (£60-120). Ask for the results in writing.
Behaviour
- High flight risk in first weeks — multi-point safety harness essential.
- Often not house-trained.
- May be traumatised (fear of men, sticks, loud noises).
- Real personality emerges only at 1-3 months post-arrival.
UK charities running ethical foreign rescue
- Galgos del Sol UK (Spanish galgos and podencos).
- Wild at Heart Foundation (Romanian, Bosnian, Sri Lankan dogs).
- K9 Crusaders / SOS Animals (Spain).
- Greek Dog Rescue (registered UK charity).
- Hope Rescue (Romanian dogs to Wales/UK).
Red flags
- Adoption without home check.
- No adoption contract, no return policy.
- Dogs travel immediately without UK foster.
- No Mediterranean disease testing documented.
- "Donation £100" — realistic minimum is £350-500 including transport, vet work and tests.
Post-Brexit import rules (2025)
- Dog must be 15+ weeks (rabies vaccine + 21 day wait).
- Microchip implanted BEFORE rabies vaccine.
- Tapeworm treatment 24-120h before arrival.
- Commercial pet movement (Balai) for rescue charities — they handle the paperwork.
- Avoid private "courier" routes that skip TRACES — risk of confiscation.
First 3 months: real costs
- Vet first-check with Med 4 panel (£100-200).
- Neutering if not done abroad (£200-400).
- Safety harness + double-lead setup (£40-80).
- 2-3 weeks of low-key adjustment time.
- Behaviourist familiar with rescue dogs (£200-400 typical).
How CanAI helps
Flag origin in your dog's profile — the AI weights advice around Mediterranean diseases and rescue-typical behaviour. Ask the AI chat if you spot symptoms (leishmaniasis is sneaky). The adoption module has more resources. And consider UK insurance covering chronic conditions — leishmaniasis lifetime treatment can hit £800-1,500/year.
